The Department of
Epidemiology, located within Michigan
State University's
College of Human Medicine, offers a Doctor of
Philosophy (PhD), Master of Science (MSc), and
a Certificate in Epidemiology. Non-degree candidates who have Graduate
Lifelong Education status may be allowed to take individual courses,
depending upon departmental or instructor approval. Introductory courses
in epidemiology and biostatistics, as well as a seminar series, have been
held in the late afternoon or early evening to facilitate participation
by working professionals.

Course Recommendations
For students enrolled
as full time students in the MSc, PhD, or certificate programs,
the recommended course registrations for Fall Semester 2006-7
are the following, under an assumption that the student wishes
to progress through the coursework requirements of the program
without delay, has 50-60 hours per week to allocate to
satisfactory completion of these courses, as well as the funding
source to cover the associated tuition and fees for this type of
rapid progress program. That is, this is not an expectation for
any part-time MSc or certificate program student, nor for
students who are working full-time while completing their
coursework requirements 'on the side' or without funding.
- EPI810
(First course in epidemiology; J. Anthony)
- STT425
(First course in biostatistics; W. Fu)
- EPI851 (First course in computational programming; Faculty)
- EPI805 (Readings in historical roots of epidemiology; M. Rip)
- EPI890 (1 credit independent study with advisor on topic of
mutual interest).
For students who can afford to spread the coursework
requirements over a larger number of semesters, and who seek to
constrain their tuition and fees expenses in the first semester,
an acceptable enrollment load would be EPI810 + STT425 + EPI851,
leaving the other coursework to be completed in later years at
MSU. This level of enrollment also might be appropriate for an
overseas student who just arrived in East Lansing and still is
becoming accustomed to local conditions, English language
proficiency, etc.
Recommended for Spring 2007 for
first year students, in order of priority by Jim Anthony
