Core Sequence in Epidemiology

EPI 810  Introductory Epidemiology

Fall 2(2-0).  Open only to master’s students in Epidemiology or approval of department.

Disease from a population perspective as the interaction of host, agent, and environment.  Case definition, measuring frequency of disease, mortality and morbidity data, and major study designs.  Offered first half of semester.

  Epidemiology Exercise and Applications

Fall. 1(1-0).  Open only to master’s students in the epidemiology major or approval of department.

Theoretical, conceptual, and methodological issues in epidemiological practice.


EPI 812
  Causal Inference in Epidemiology

Fall 3 (3-0).  Open only to master’s students in Epidemiology or approval of department.

Causality in epidemiology.  Application of theoretical concepts to the design, analysis, and assessment of epidemiologic research.
 

EPI 813  Investigation of Disease Outbreaks

Principles of and practice in investigating disease outbreaks.

EPI (Number Pending) Seminar on Responsible Conduct of Research
1 credit  Summer Semester  First Summer Session- Session 1 every year First Summer Session

Ethical and regulatory issues in the responsible conduct of epidemiology research.  Each topic is discussed in the context of epidemiology studies conducted by MSU and other epidemiologists.  Topics include informed consent; scientific misconduct; human subjects protection; responsible data management including electronic medical records, biological samples and genetic data; HIPAA compliance; and other current issues of scientific integrity. Coordinates with the  required Graduate School workshop series "Responsible Conduct of Research"  to assure coverage of additional topics such as plagarism, authorship, whistle blowing, and academic rights and  responsibilities.

 

LCS829  Design and Conduct of Epidemiological Studies and Clinical Trials

(EPI 829)        Spring 3(2-2)
Prereq.: (VM 533 or EPI 810) & STT 425


Applied analytical methods in experimental design  Assessment of health and disease status of animal and human populations.  Risk assessment and interpretation of clinical trials.


EPI 831  Global Burden of Disease- Non-Communicable I

Fall 1(2-0).  Open only to students in the Epidemiology major or in the Global Public Health and Epidemiology Specialization or in the Health Communication major or approval of department.
Prereq.:
EPI 810 or concurrently

Cardiovascular disease, diabetes, breast cancer & neurological diseases will be discussed in this ½ semester lecture-seminar course.  It covers the epidemiology & public health aspects of non-communicable diseases, & also includes varying topics like data sources (State vital records), drug dependence, kidney disease, psychiatric diseases & others of interest.  Offered first half of semester.

EPI 832  Global Burden of Disease- Communicable I 

Fall 1(2-0).  Open only to students in the Epidemiology major or in the Global Public  Health and Epidemiology Specialization or in the Health Communication major or approval of department.
Prereq.:
EPI 810 or concurrently

Tuberculosis, food-borne illnesses, anti-microbial resistance & avian influenza topics will be discussed in this ½ semester lecture-seminar course.  It cover the epidemiology & public health aspects of these communicable diseases.  Potential topics include outbreak investigations, rabies, SARS, zoonotic diseases & emerging diseases.  Offered second half of semester.


EPI 833  Global Burden of Disease- Non-Communicable II

Spring 1(2-0).  Open only to students in the Epidemiology major or in the Global Public Health and Epidemiology Specialization or in the Health Communication major, or approval of department.

Asthma, colon cancer, psychiatric diseases & chronic obstructive pulmonary disease-related topics are covered in this ½ semester lecture-seminar course.  Potential topics in the course on the epidemiology & public health aspects of non-communicable diseases include lectures & reading material on data sources (birth defects), drug dependence, psychiatric diseases & kidney diseases.  Offered first half of semester.


EPI 834  Global Burden of Disease- Communicable II

Spring 1(2-0)  Open only to students in the Epidemiology major in the Global Public Health and Epidemiology Specialization or in the Health Communication major, or approval of department.
Prereq.:
EPI 810 or concurrently

HIV, influenza, West Nile, and vaccine-preventable diseases and related topics will be covered in this ½ semester lecture-seminar course.  This course will discuss the epidemiology and public health aspects of commjunicable diseases, & provide lectures & reading material on varying topics, including rabies, outbreak investigations, SARS zoonotic diseases & emerging diseases.  Offered second half of semester.

EPI 910  Themes in Contemporary Epidemiology

Recommended Background: Master of Science in Epidemiology
Restrictions: Open to doctoral students in the Epidemiology major.
Description: Discussion and critique of important contemporary themes in epidemiology as reflected in current publications in the field.
