Biostatistics PhD Program

We welcome and review applications throughout the year; however, applications should be received by March 15 to be guaranteed consideration for Fall Semester admission (later applications are considered as space permits).

Earlier applications are recommended if applicants want to apply for financial support from MSU. The application deadline for University scholarships is typically before the end of December.

Learn how our PhD and Masters graduates are making differences around the world.

1. Basic admission requirements for all candidates:

  • MS in Biostatistics, Statistics or equivalent. Applicants without MS from quantitative (e.g., mathematics) or students from biological fields may also qualify, but they will need to complete before choosing an emphasis MS-level training in probability, mathematical statistics and inference (e.g., STT 861, STT 862, STT 863 and STT 864 or equivalents). Additionally, the applicants to the Ph.D. program should have taken courses in multivariate calculus, and advanced undergraduate courses in linear algebra and probability. Experience with numerical computing is also recommended. Applications from students in applied fields such as biology, biochemistry, economics and computer science are strongly encouraged, with the understanding that necessary mathematical coursework may have to be completed before enrollment in the program.

Application. Applicants must submit:

  • Official transcript showing completion of MS in Statistics, Biostatistics or equivalent degree.

  • GRE (Graduate Record Examination) scores, or MCAT scores.

  • Provide evidence of competency in English (TOEFL scores) if their native language is other than English.

  • Three letters of recommendation.

  • A statement of purpose.

  • Research Interest Form

Applicants with strong academic records who are in the process of completing a master of science degree may be admitted on a provisional basis. However, final receipt of completion of MS degree is required. The first 40 credits applied towards the completion of a master of science may not be counted toward the Ph.D. in Biostatistics.

2. International applicants must provide TOEFL scores.

  • Minimum score of 90 on the internet-based TOEFL, 580 on the paper-based TOEFL, or passing grade on the MSU English Language Test (MSUELT).

  • Scores must be no older than 2 years. International students with full native fluency in English are exempt (as per MSU Graduate School requirements).

  • MSU requires a Statement of Financial Proof for international applicants to be considered for admission; this document also includes a useful checklist of other items needed.

3. Applicants with prior graduate degrees or other advanced graduate-level coursework:

  • A maximum of 9 semester credit hours from graduate courses can be transferred toward credits for the PhD. These courses must match existing course options in the MSU program and be approved by the department.
