Dr. Charles is an environmental health professional who believes that to create sustainable change in communities around health issues a multi-factorial, multi-level innovative focus that would impact population, community and individual health is required. She has over a decade of public health practice during which she engaged in multi-level, multi-cultural, evidence-based intervention initiatives and research through collaborative university-community partnerships to address health inequities. Her expertise includes environmental sampling and hazard analysis; utilizing evidence-based, innovative behavioral intervention models (development, implementation and evaluation); using community-based participatory research principles to address chronic disease capacity building and disease prevention across the life course; community network development and evaluation including faith-based and school-based health initiatives to reduce health disparities; and healthy housing initiatives. She has guided the formation of a highly diverse community-academic partnership – the Center for Children and Family Health and Wellness, Inc. – a 501(c)3 non-profit organization the vision for which is “to promote health equity and social justice around chronic disease in children towards the elimination of health disparities through collaborative partnerships”. Her professional service extends to several national, international, and/or state level boards, working groups and organizations such as the ATSDR/CDC Brownfields and Reuse Opportunity Working Network, previous Environmental Justice Co-Chair for Environmental Section in the American Public Health Association, Georgia Health Housing Advisory Board, and peer-review journal article and grant reviewer. Her collaborations extend to her native region – the Caribbean – where she serves as a Senior Visiting Lecturer with the Tropical Medicine Research Institute at the University of the West Indies, Mona campus. She has served as a mentor for several students (undergraduate and graduate; national and international) and junior faculty.
