Cancer Epidemiology
University Faculty Leadership Position
(Population Science at full or associate professor rank)

Tenured or tenure track, 100% time.
Salary, rank, and tenure status will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

DUTIES: The Department of Epidemiology at Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine seeks candidates for its Cancer Epidemiology (Population Science) faculty at Full or Associate Professor Rank.  This position requires cultivation of research opportunities and collaborations within an extensive Michigan clinical practice and research network, including the Great Lakes Cancer Institute’s (GLCI) Clinical Cancer Research Center, which is a joint venture of MSU and McLaren Health Care (http://www.glci.com), as well as the the Great Lakes Research in Practice Network.

The successful candidate will be a cancer epidemiologist who is a scientist-teacher-leader committed to population sciences and patient-oriented clinical epidemiology research that creates opportunities for translational laboratory research collaborations. Success in this post will require development of a cancer epidemiology research unit and multi-investigator program, and the extra effort required to weave the department’s current and future single-PI research projects into the fabric of more programmatic multi-PI initiatives.  To this end, the post involves leadership in new lines of multi-PI transdisciplinary and translational research leading to important new discoveries and new approaches to cancer prevention and control in community and clinical populations.

Research opportunities in connection with Western Michigan Campus of the medical school also exist, including collaborative research with the Van Andel Institute (VAI) (www.vai.org), and clinical service systems such as Spectrum Health, and Trinity Health. Collaborations linking all campuses around the state with VAI and the other western Michigan partners will be encouraged. In addition, consistent with MSU’s commitment to an increasing global impact, the Department of Epidemiology is a partner in the INCLEN initiative (www.inclen.org) and hosts two other MSU- and NIH-supported international research networks, one that links MSU with partner universities throughout the western hemisphere, and the other with partner medical and public health schools in sub-Saharan Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. As such, international research on cancer epidemiology, prevention, and control also will be encouraged and nurtured, in complement with more Michigan-oriented and US-oriented aspects of the research program.

The Cancer Epidemiology Population Science program of research can encompass clinical and randomized trials and other program evaluations, research on patterns of care, behavioral interventions, survivorship, etiologic, prevention and engagement with principal investigators who tap tumor registry data.

Additional responsibilities include cancer epidemiology-related classroom instruction, research apprentice/fellow training and mentoring, and general participation in graduate and postdoctoral education and outreach, as well as development of new NCI and other NIH-funded research training programs.

QUALIFICATIONS:  MD or PhD in Epidemiology or Biostatistics/Statistics (or suitable alternative PhD) with strong research credentials in cancer epidemiology, plus experiences and background appropriate to the senior level responsibilities described above. National and international reputation in cancer research, based upon: (a) a sustained track record of successful NIH funding; (b) a sustained line of peer reviewed contributions pertinent to cancer epidemiology, prevention, and control; (c) clear potential or demonstrated success in building productive teams for transdisciplinary and translational research that accommodates intervention-oriented bench-bedside-community collaborations.

Vision, enthusiastic commitment, and leadership qualities required, with intended Michigan-oriented, US-oriented and global impact.

APPLICATIONS:  Applications are currently being reviewed and will continue to be until the appropriate candidate is found. MSU is an affirmative action, equal opportunity employer. MSU is strongly committed to achieving excellence through cultural diversity. The university actively encourages applications and nominations of women, persons of color, veterans and persons with disabilities. Applicants who are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents must provide documentation of employment authorization in the United States.  Interested candidates should submit a letter of interest, the curriculum vitae, and the names and complete contact information of three professional references to James C. Professorial rank at full, associate, or assistant professor level will depend upon qualifications and experience.  The successful candidate will be an infectious disease epidemiologist who has potential for strong leadership or demonstrated strong leadership in NIH-oriented research, and will be committed to population-oriented translational epidemiology research with a focus on HIV/AIDS and related challenges in infectious disease epidemiology. Many opportunities for epidemiological studies focused upon patient-oriented and family-oriented preventive and ameliorative interventions are present.

Additional duties include graduate school and medical school instructional responsibilities of the Epidemiology Department, with a relatively light classroom instruction, advising, and curriculum development load. This faculty member will be expected to participate in development of an NIH T32 research training program in infectious disease epidemiology, and may have the opportunity to lead the development of this research training program.

Two Faculty Positions in Human Genetics

Two faculty positions in human genetics are available at Michigan State University (MSU) as part of a campus-wide initiative to increase human genetics research on campus.  Individuals are sought for one junior level (assistant professor) and one senior level position.

Research will address fundamental questions of human genetics.  At least one position is intended for a candidate having research experience in statistical genetics/genetic epidemiology with an emphasis on complex diseases.  In addition, a laboratory-based human geneticist is sought.

MSU offers a highly collegial, interdisciplinary environment with many collaborative opportunities through two MSU community-based medical schools (MD and DO) associated with large health care systems in six cities, four genetics diagnostic labs (DNA, cytogenetics, prenatal screening, HLA), a genetic counseling center, strong epidemiology, cell & molecular biology and neuroscience programs, an interdepartmental graduate program in genetics, and strength in research in a wide array of basic sciences.  Michigan State provides excellent research core facilities in genomics, proteomics, and microscopy.

Each successful candidate may choose to be affiliated academically with one or more departments, including Microbiology & Molecular Genetics, Pediatrics & Human Development, Epidemiology, Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Pathobiology & Diagnostic Investigation, Physiology, Psychology, Pharmacology & Toxicology and Statistics and Probability.

These are academic-year, tenure-track, research-oriented positions, with moderate teaching responsibility.  A doctoral degree (PhD, MD, DVM, or DO) and research experience are required.  Salary will be commensurate with experience.  Applicants should submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae, statement of research goals, copies of pertinent reprints and contact information (address, e-mail, and phone) for three referees to the following address.  Digital submissions in pdf format to genetics@msu.edu are encouraged.  Review of applications will begin in November, 2007 and will continue until the position is filled.
