Research Training in Drug Dependence Epidemiology at MSU

Dr. James C. (Jim) Anthony serves as the director on an NIH/NIDA supported T-32 training fellowship program in the Department of Epidemiology in Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine.  Two postdoctoral and two predoctoral 2 year fellowship positions are available each year for highly motivated U.S. citizens or permanent residents. Trainees will master the basic and advanced concepts, principles, and research approaches of epidemiology as applied in the study of drug dependence processes, from its earliest stages - the first opportunity to try a drug - through its later complications, such as drug overdose and HIV/AIDS, through individualized learning experiences.  The annual stipend is based on the Ruth L. Kirschstein NRSA Stipend levels.  Currently predoctoral fellows earn $20,772 and the postdoctoral stipend ranges from $36,996 - $51,036 depending on years since award of doctoral degree.  In addition this program includes health insurance coverage, the cost of tuition and fees, and provides an allowance for supplies (e.g.: computer) and conference travel.  Predoctoral fellows must be enrolled in the Ph.D. program in Epidemiology at MSU.

The program is comprised of 4 departmental faculty with background in NIDA training and drug dependence as well as others in the Department of Epidemiology and at the University who have current funding for research in the NIDA portfolio and other research.  Collaborating MSU departments include:  Pharmacology and Toxicology, Psychiatry, Neurology, Psychology, Family Practice, Medicine, Kinesiology, and Family and Child Ecology.  Faculty are strongly to committed to teaching and mentoring.
