Welcome to the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Michigan State University! Although the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics is part of the College of Human Medicine at Michigan State University, our department engages with faculty and students in multiple different colleges across campus. The primary work of our department can be divided into three areas:

1) research and scholarship, 2) education and research training, and 3) outreach activities.

In research and scholarship, our faculty strive to produce convincing evidence that will lead to improvements in public health in Michigan, the US, and worldwide. This also includes a keen focus on developing new advanced biostatistical and epidemiological methods to produce this evidence.

In education, our goal is to educate masters’ and doctoral-level researchers to be experts and leaders in epidemiology, public health, biostatistics and clinical research. We also take the lead role in educating medical students in the College of Human Medicine on the concepts, principles, and methods of evidence-based medicine and critical appraisal. We are also excited to be undertaking a new initiative to expand our educational efforts within the undergraduate curriculum, through the development of the Specialization in Global Public Health and Epidemiology.

Our outreach activities are designed to impact public health practice from our local community to international settings. National and state-level work is supported by governmental organizations such as the National Institutes of Health, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Michigan Department of Community Health, as well as by various non-governmental organizations. International outreach is promoted through collaborations with colleagues and organizations throughout the world, but particularly in Africa and Latin America.
